At Golden Road Arts, our free art lessons for kids are designed to spark imagination, encourage experimentation, foster critical thinking and build confidence through creative expression. Since 2020 our nonprofit organization has been helping children, families and educators gain access to free art resources so that people from all backgrounds can experience the creative and educational benefits art can provide.

Of all the different types of creative approaches, process art stands out as one of the most powerful ways to nurture a lifelong love of learning in children.

The Benefits of Process Art for Young Learners

Process art refers to a creative approach that involves focusing on the act of creating rather than on the specific outcome. Unlike other forms of art, there is no definitive model to follow, no “right or wrong” finished product. Instead, children are given materials and encouraged to use them any way they wish. They might combine colors, craft a collage, or even create something completely unexpected. They will reap a wide range of benefits from their efforts that will shape the way they approach challenges for years to come.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) highlights the importance that role play, exploration, and hands-on experiences have on the learning and development of young learners.

Builds Critical Thinking Skills

While engaged in process art, every decision a child makes becomes an integral part of their learning journey. From selecting colors, layering materials – and even changing their approach mid-project – each choice allows young artists to practice their critical thinking skills and encourages them to explore new ideas.

Additionally, because there is no “right” outcome, process art helps students become more comfortable with uncertainty. Because they don’t feel pressured, they’ll be more open to examining, experimenting, and discovering new things.

Encourages Creative Expression

Process art fosters creative thinking skills in children as they carefully contemplate and actively engage with what they’re making. While exploring different techniques and materials, young learners put their creativity to work and start to gain an understanding of and appreciation for how their unique choices shape the outcome of their artwork.

Over time, the creative thinking skills that children acquire through process art boosts their confidence and motivates them to take creative risks. Moreover, it encourages them to trust their instincts as they approach new challenges, not only in art, but in everyday life.

Supports Emotional Expression

Creative art activities provide a safe and supportive space for children to express feelings that they may be too afraid to share, or may not be able to put into words. Since process art is open-ended, young learners can explore their emotions freely without worrying about being judged.

When children don’t feel pressured to produce a “perfect” final work, they’re more inclined to use their creativity to express their feelings in an open, honest and healthy way.
