Printmaking is an excellent activity for young artists, as it combines creativity, discovery and hands-on learning. At Golden Road Arts, we provide free printmaking lessons to introduce budding artists to exciting techniques and processes. From stamping to textured prints to creative mixed-media designs, read on to discover some interesting and engaging printmaking projects for children.

Easy Printmaking Activities for Young Artists to Try

Of all the different ways children can create art, printmaking may be one of the most exciting, as every print reveals something completely new. Whether using materials from the natural world, everyday objects or even simple tools, printmaking encourages young artists to experiment with color, texture and patterns in unique and creative ways.

The process of transferring images, textures and patterns onto paper helps children see art from different perspectives while inspiring creativity. Best of all, printmaking is simple enough for a wide range of ages and skill levels, making art accessible for all.

Potato Stamp Prints

Perhaps the easiest way to introduce printmaking to children is with the humble potato. Slicing a potato in half, carving shapes or patterns into the flesh of each half, then applying paint to the shapes or patterns is all this project requires. Children can dip the potatoes into various colors of paint and press them onto sheets of paper to create repeating patterns, colorful designs, decorative borders or anything else they can think of. This simple activity allows inspiring artists to explore composition while developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Printmaking With Recycled Materials

Everyday objects can be repurposed into artwork. Materials like cardboard, bubble wrap, bottle caps and foam packaging can be used to create distinctive prints and patterns. In addition to igniting creative thinking and exploring techniques inspired by different types of printmaking, using recycled materials to generate prints also encourages resourcefulness, an invaluable life skill.

Foam Relief Printing

Basic sheets of foam offer a beginner-friendly introduction to relief printing. Young learners can use writing utensils to draw designs onto the foam. They’ll use a roller or brush to apply paint, then transfer the image by pressing the paint-covered foam onto paper. Through this technique, children can explore line, shape and texture while creating repeat copies of the same design.

Leaf and Nature Prints

The natural world provides endless opportunities for creative printmaking projects. Children can collect leaves, flowers, pinecones, shells, sticks, feathers and various other natural objects, then coat the treasures they find in paint and press them onto paper to make unique impressions. While engaging in this activity, encourage children to compare the textures and shapes of different materials so they gain a deeper appreciation for both art and nature. This simple printmaking technique is an easy way for parents to encourage creativity in their children.
