Winter days spent indoors are the perfect time for children to learn new art skills and express their creativity. With many free art lessons for kids available from Golden Road Arts, it’s never been easier for children to master the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture. Winter is a particularly inspiring time of year for creativity, with snow, ice and holiday themes providing great subjects for an artistic endeavor. Here are some favorite art lessons to try this winter.

Fun Winter Art Lessons Your Kids Will Love

Winter art doesn’t need to be complicated. With some simple art materials and space in the home or classroom, kids can get to work on these fun art lessons.

Winter Colors Art Project

As does every season, winter has a distinct color palette that can be expressed in various art projects. Shades of blue, white, gray, brown and silver are most common in winter-themed art projects for kids. For this lesson, you can encourage children to paint a winter scene of their choosing using a limited palette. This approach can help kids with color recognition and improve their observational skills.

Winter-Themed Animal Art

Children can begin by choosing an animal commonly associated with winter, such as a penguin, polar bear, snowy owl or reindeer. With magazines, colored paper, old fabric, cotton and other items, they can then create a collage using techniques like layering and overlapping. To make a more substantial design, kids can take some time to first learn about the animal and its environment.

Northern Lights Painting

Children are fascinated by the dramatic colors and atmospheric effects of the northern lights. For this art lesson you can show kids some images or videos of the aurora borealis to inspire a unique watercolor painting. As one of the most popular types of art with kids during winter, watercolor painting encourages the artist to create vivid designs, contrasting a dark background with neon color splashes.

Snowman Craft Project

Some of the best art lessons for kids require only simple household materials. This project uses everyday items found around the home to create a snowman design on cardstock. Children can begin by sketching an outline for the snowman with simple lines and shapes. Next, glue items to the card to add texture. You could use cotton balls for a fluffy texture, twigs for arms, button eyes, scraps of fabric for a scarf, or try some unexpected items for a unique appearance.
